Hammond wordt Varityper
In 1926 verkopen de aandeelhouders Hammond aan een bedrijf dat zich kort
daarna 'The VariTyper Company' noemt - en zijn schrijfmachines 'Varitypers'. De
opdruk op deze machine is daar getuige van: 'VariTyper Incorporated
(Hammond Patents)'.
Met 55 talen en 300 lettertypes, wordt ze een klinkend succes.
Zetwerk in ieders bereik
Toch overleeft VariTyper de beginjaren van de Grote
Depressie niet. Gelukkig vist Coxhead de Hammond-octrooien enkele jaren later weer op.
En geeft het de vijftig jaar oude Hammond-technologie een tweede jeugd met 'cold
typesetting'. Hiermee produceer je aan je bureau goedkoop en toch degelijk zetwerk,
dat klaar is voor de offsetpers.
De Coxhead-machines blijven
kopers vinden tot in de jaren zeventig - een eeuw nadat Hammond de machine
heeft bedacht!
Hammond becomes Varityper
In 1926 the shareholders sell Hammond to a company that shortly afterwards,
calls itself 'The VariTyper Company' - and its typewriters 'Varitypers'. The
printing on this machine is witness to this: 'VariTyper Incorporated (Hammond
Patents)'.
With 55 languages and 300 characters, it becomes a resounding success.
Typesetting within the reach of everyone
However, the VariTyper does not survive the first years of the
Great Depression. Thankfully, a few years later
Coxhead fishes up the Hammond patents again and gives the fifty year old Hammond
technology a second youth with 'cold typesetting'. With this, cheap and reliable
typesetting ready for the offset press, can be prepared at the desk.
The Coxhead machines continue to find buyers until well into the nineteen
seventies - a century after Hammond invented the machine!
