Kantoorgigant ontdekt thuismarkt
Op kantoor is Underwood in het begin van de twintigste eeuw
oppermachtig. Maar ook de thuismarkt lonkt, nu ze stilaan wordt gevormd - én
ingepalmd - door de Corona 3. De Underwood-ingenieurs
slagen in 1919 in een huzarenstukje: een draagbare schrijfmachine,
die even klein is als de Corona 3. Maar dan wel zonder dat ze moet worden
opgevouwen!
Tussen wal en schip
Toch gaat het dit kleinood niet voor de wind. Want Underwood bevindt zich plots in een
marktsegment dat het niet kent. En waarin de thuisgebruikers Underwood niet
kennen.
Dan maar de machine verkopen aan kantoorgebruikers? Die zijn dan weer niet
vertrouwd met de drie toetsenbordrijen met dubbele shifttoets. En tot overmaat van ramp lanceert Remington
een jaar later de eerste portable met vier rijen ...
Underwood is uit zijn lood geslagen en wacht met zijn
4 nog zes jaar.
Office giant discovers domestic market
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Underwood reigns supreme. But the
domestic market also entices, now that it is gradually being formed -and
nabbed- by the Corona 3. The Underwood engineers
pull off a difficult feat in 1919: a portable typewriter, just as small as the
Corona 3. It does not have to be folded, however!
Falling between two stools
Yet all does not go well for this little gem as Underwood finds itself in a
market segment that it does not know. Moreover, the home-user does not know
Underwood either.
Would it be a better idea to sell the machine to office users? They are not
used to the three bank keyboard with double shift key and to make matters worse,
a year later Remington launches the first
portable with four rows ...
Underwood is thrown off balance and waits with his
4 for another six years.
