Eerste échte draagbare schrijfmachine
Dertig jaar na de uitvinding van de eerste
schrijfmachine is er nog altijd geen draagbare versie van. Toegegeven, de
eigenzinnige Blick vervult wel die rol, maar
is te traag voor haastige journalisten 'te velde' en heeft een onhandig
inktkussentje in plaats van een lint.
In 1906 verbaast ingenieur Frank Rose vriend en vijand met zijn ontwerp van
deze Standard Folding Typewriter. Hij gebruikt
de lege ruimte boven de toetsen, om er de rol in op te bergen, die boven de
machine uittorent. Met een ingenieus klapsysteem vouwt de gebruiker zijn machine
na gebruik op tot een klein, ongenaakbaar pakketje dat precies in zijn
draagkoffertje past. Compact én vederlicht door zijn aluminium frame.
Meteen is ook de basis gelegd voor de latere
Corona 3.
Deze versie is een model 1, met links en rechts een shift- of een capstoets.
First really portable typewriter
Thirty years after the invention of the first
typewriter, there is still no portable version. Agreed, the stubborn
Blick fulfills that role, but is too slow for
hasty journalists 'in the field' and has an ink pad instead of a ribbon.
In 1906, engineer Frank Rose surprises friend and foe with his design of this
Standard Folding Typewriter. He uses the empty space above the keys to stow the
platen that towers above the machine. With the aid of an ingenious folding
system, after use, the user folds his machine into a small packet for safe
keeping. This fits precisely into its portable case. It is compact and as light
as a feather due to its aluminum frame.
At the same time, the basis is also laid down for the later
Corona 3.
This version is a model 1, with left and right a shift or a caps lock
key.
