Dubbel toetsenbord
De eerste en enige neerklopper van Smith
Premier, waarbij je - na 20 jaar - eindelijk kunt zien wat je typt! Helaas
te laat: de concurrenten hebben de markt al ingepalmd.
Ook Remington zit in hetzelfde schuitje. Het lanceert zijn eerste 'visible machine'
(de Remington 10) op hetzelfde moment als de Smith
Premier 10. En herovert een stukje van zijn
marktaandeel op Underwood.
Smith Premier niet. Waarom? Omdat het even halsstarrig vasthoudt aan het dubbele toetsenbord. Dat is natuurlijk fraai om
als unique selling point mee uit te pakken in je reclame. Maar wat baat
het, als het in de praktijk een nadeel blijkt?
Blind typen onmogelijk
Want intussen is het 'blind' typen gemeengoed, waarbij de handen rusten en
alleen de vingers bewegen. En dat lukt niet op de 84 toetsen in 7 rijen van de
Smith Premier. In snelheidswedstrijden delven Smith Premier-typisten dan ook
steevast het onderspit tegenover collega's op een enkel standaard-toetsenbord. Toch sleept
de doodstrijd van het dubbele toetsenbord nog aan tot in 1921. Daarna verschijnt
de merknaam 'Smith Premier' alleen nog op standaard Monarch- en
Remingtonmachines.

After 20 years, you can at last see what you are typing! Sadly, it is too late:
the competitors have already nabbed the market.
Remington is also in the same boat. It launches its first 'visible machine'
(the Remington 10) at the same time as the Smith
Premier 10 and wins back part of its market share from
Underwood.
Not Smith Premier. Why? Because it obstinately holds on to its double
keyboard. This is great to splash out with a unique selling point in an
advertisement. But does this help if it turns out to be a disadvantage in
practice?
Blind typing impossible
In the meantime, blind typing has become the norm; the hands rest and only
the fingers move. This is impossible on the 84 keys of the 7 rows of the Smith
Premier. In speed competitions, the Smith Premier typists always come off worst
in comparison to their colleagues on a single standard keyboard. Yet the death
struggle of the double keyboard carries on till 1921. After that, the brand-name
'Smith Premier' only appears on standard Monarch and Remington machines.
