Semi-draagbaar plat werkpaard
Uitvinder E.B. Hess is een man met ambitie en doorzettingsvermogen. Zijn
doelstelling is eenvoudig: de beste schijfmachine bouwen. Een die zowel
oerdegelijk als licht van gewicht én toetsaanslag is. Het resultaat: deze Royal 1,
die in 1906 op de markt komt.
Plat profiel ('flat bed'), lederen draagkoffer maar wel tien kilogram zwaar - je
zou het een semi-draagbare machine kunnen noemen. Zij is echter een plezier om
op te typen: vederlichte toetsen die versnellen naarmate je erop doorduwt.
Té klein voor kantoor
Toch weet de conservatieve zakelijke markt niet wat ze met deze kantoormachine
aanmoet. Zij ziet er gewoon niet uit als een stoere
Underwood of
Remington.
Royal doet dan maar een tweede gooi naar succes met de
Royal Standard 5.
Semi-portable flat work horse
Inventor E.B. Hess is an ambitious man with drive. His aim is simple: to
build the best typewriter. One that is not only extremely solid, but is also
lightweight and has a light touch. The result: this Royal 1 that comes onto the
market in 1906.
Flat profile ('flat bed') and a leather case, but as it weighs ten kilos, you
could call it a semi-portable machine. However, it is a pleasure to type on with
light keys that accelerate the more you press them.
Too small for the office
Yet, the conservative business market does not know what to make of this
office machine. It just does not look like the sturdy
Underwood or Remington.
Royal has a second stab at success with the
Royal Standard 5.
