Plastic pop art-icoon
Ettore Sottsass jr. is een Italiaans architect en designer. Hij geeft ook
twintig jaar lang mee vorm aan Olivetti-kantoormachines en -meubilair. Met deze
knalrode Olivetti Valentine en zijn oranje spoelen brengt hij pop art de
schrijfmachinewereld binnen. Kan de breuk met de traditionele vormgeving nog
groter zijn?
De vederlichte plastic Valentine wordt meteen gebombardeerd tot designicoon
en schittert in vele designmusea. De doorsneeburger is er minder gek van - ook
omdat hij technisch minder goed in elkaar steekt dan men van Olivetti
verwacht. Hij is ook verkrijgbaar in grijze versie (zeldzaam), blauwe (nog
zeldzamer) en groene (haast onvindbaar).
Multidisciplinair
Net zoals heel wat voorgangers, lanceert Olivetti ook deze schrijfmachine met
een reeks posters van eigentijdse kunstenaars. Die traditie gaat terug tot Adriano Olivetti in de jaren dertig. Hij verrijkt zijn technische ontwerpteams
met grafisch ontwerpers, schrijvers, kunstenaars, schilders, en reclamemakers.
Het resultaat: kantoormachines die technisch vernuft en stijl verzoenen.
Plastic pop-art icon

Olivetti Valentine with orange spools, he brings pop-art into the typewriter
world. Could the split with traditional design be any greater?
The plastic Valentine, which is as light as a feather, is immediately called
a design icon and takes pride of place in many design museums. The man in the
street is not so enthusiastic, also because it is technically not as good as can
be expected from Olivetti. He can be obtained in grey (rare), blue (rarer) and
green (rarer still).
Multidisciplinary
Just like many predecessors, Olivetti launches this typewriter with a series
of posters of contemporary artists. This
tradition goes back to Adriano Olivetti in the nineteen thirties. He enriches
his technical design teams with graphic designers, writers, artists, painters,
and advertisers. The result is office machines that reconcile technical
ingenuity and style.
