Geïndexeerde Art Nouveau
De Odell is een lineaire indexmachine, waarop je bovenaan de letter selecteert
en ze daarna op het papier slaat. Je kijkt tegen de zijkant van
het blad aan, ongeveer zoals een linkshandige schrijft. De letters worden geïnkt
door een inktrolletje.
Met de eerste Odell van 1889 kun je alleen maar hoofdletters schrijven, maar
dat wordt rechtgezet met deze Odell 2 uit 1890. Hij rust op een schitterende
basis van plantenmotieven in pure Art Nouveau - zoals de zijkanten van de
Smith Premier 1.
Indexmachines verliezen de strijd
Bij het begin van de twintigste eeuw is het rijk van de indexmachines uit,
omdat de standaard-schrijfmachines veel meer waar voor hun geld bieden. Toch
houdt er een stand: de Mignon.
Indexed Art Nouveau
The Odell is a linear index machine; you choose the letter at the top after
which it strikes the paper. You look at the side of the paper, more or less as a
left-handed person writes. The letters are inked by an ink roll..
The first Odell from 1889 only had capitals, but this is rectified by this
Odell 2 from 1890. It rests on a beautiful base with a plant pattern in pure Art
Nouveau style, like the sides of the Smith Premier 1.
Index machines lose the battle
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the domain of the index machines
ends because the standard typewriters offer much more. Yet, one still holds its
own: the Mignon.
