Type-Writer. Want dat is een merknaam van Remington. De Caligraph wordt dus een 'writing machine'.
Was hij ooit succesrijker geweest dan de Type-Writer? Dan heette deze site nu
caligraph.be.
De Caligraph is Remingtons eerste
concurrent. Hij wordt gelanceerd door niemand minder dan diens voormalige
verdeler Yost, en gemaakt door de American Writing
Machine Corporation. Op mechanisch vlak gaat de Caligraph dan ook bij de
Remington te leen, al pronkt hij wel met een langere 'motorkap' voor een lichtere aanslag.
En typt hij alleen hoofdletters ...
Dubbel toetsenbord
Twee jaar later kan deze Caligraph 2 ook kleine letters aan. Meer nog:
hij krijgt zelfs afzonderlijke toetsen voor kleine letters en
hoofdletters. Dat lijkt theoretisch logischer dan twee toetsen te moeten aanslaan
voor één hoofdletter. Dit dubbele
toetsenbord geeft meteen het startschot van jarenlang gekibbel en
typecompetities tussen 'enkele' of 'dubbele' aanhangers.
Two is company, three is a crowd
De Remingtons en de Caligraphs verdelen in de jaren tachtig de
markt onder elkaar, op de hielen gezeten door de non-conformistische
Hammond. In 1887 houdt Yost het weer voor
gezien en brengt hij met zijn eigen bedrijf zijn eigen machine op de markt: de
Yost.
A typewriter that isn't one
The second typewriter that comes on the market is not
a... Type-Writer. This is one of Remington's brand-names and for this
reason, the Caligraph becomes a 'writing machine'. What if it had been more
successful than the Type-Writer? This site would now be called caligraph.be.
The Caligraph is Remington's first
competitor. It is launched by no less a company than its former distributor
Yost and made by the American Writing Machine
Corporation. With regard to mechanics, the Caligraph also borrows from the
Remington. However, it does sport a longer 'hood'
for a lighter touch. Moreover, it only types capitals ...
Double keyboard
Two years later, this Caligraph 2 can also handle lower-case
letters. What's more: it even gets separate keys for lower-case and
upper-case letters. That seems more logical, theoretically speaking, than
having to hit two keys for one capital. This double keyboard immediately heralds
the beginning of years of bickering and typing
competitions between 'single' and 'double' advocates.
Two is company, three is a crowd
In the eighteen eighties, the
Remingtons and the Caligraphs carve up the market between them, with the
nonconformist Hammond close on their heels. In
1887, Yost packs it in and, with his own company, brings his own machine onto
the market: the Yost.
